For code to be included in GNU Emacs, it is required that all copyright is
explicitly handed over to the Free Software Foundation. Github currently
lists 211 contributors for Magit. All of those would have to be tracked
down and convinced to sign the necessary legal papers before Magit can
become part of GNU Emacs. If any don't agree (or can't be found) then their
code needs to be removed first and replaced by a "clean room" implemenation..

This process of tracking down contributors has happened before, e.g. it's
necessary when a project decides to change licenses, but it's pretty rare,
and for it to stand any chance the main author of Magit would have to start
that process, which it seems he isn't doing.

Alternatively someone could write a new Git porcelain for GNU Emacs, but
given that there is already an excellent third party package that does just
that the only incentive would be ideological.

RMS has as much the right as anyone to state what he would like to see
happen, but that doesn't mean reality needs to follow suit.

By the way the project is 76% funded now (CHF 41,757 pledged of CHF 55,000
goal). With two weeks to go I think he has a very good chance of making it.
I'll certainly be pitching in my share.
