One reason for a slowdown could be that now magit issues a 

 git --no-pager -c core.preloadindex=true commit —

before each commit, and similar commands. I’m not 100% sure, but it looks to me as if this runs githooks you might have installed - very often. This slows things down for me (but not unbearably), and otherwise I’m quite happy with magit.
