"We launched a magazine called 'Film Critique.' While we were working on the
magazine, a 19-year-old man committed a series of murders, but his motives were
unknown. Usually young people who are angry at society are drawn to political
activism or ordinary crime. But he didn't use drugs, nor did he become a
Yakuza. We wondered why he committed such a crime, and we decided to do some
research on it for a film. We went location-hunting, starting from where
Nagayama Norio was born to the place where he was arrested. We were also
scouting to find ideas for a screenplay. But what kind of screenplay? What kind
of film? Visiting all the places he had lived, we realized that he had really
tried to live honestly, but something wouldn't let him. But what? As expected
he was extremely poor. He couldn't afford to eat, he and his siblings often
starved. But this wasn't the reason for his crime. Visiting all these places,
we became aware of something. All over Japan, from the countryside to the
metropolis of Tokyo, there are motorways and high rises built in cities; small
towns everywhere are being transformed into reproductions of Tokyo. Nagayama
travelled Japan, trying his hand at different jobs, always in this suffocating
situation surrounded by concrete walls. In the end he didn't know what to do.
He snuck into an American military base, stole a gun. And ended up losing it,
pulling the trigger. We asked ourseleves what kind of film we could make from
this, and all agreed that a story was unnecessary. We decided to film how this
country and its magnificent landscapes oppresses people. We just started
filming without thinking of story or composition. And soon we realized how the
landscape reflected the image of power in society. We wanted to show how this
power takes the shape of the urban landscape, so we filmed, discarding
unnecessary images, and this idea became very clear. Actually, at first we
intended to include a story as well. But we decided to drop the idea, because
the landscape images were enough. That's how we made 'A.K.A. Serial Killer,' a
film inspired by the theory of landscape."
