The customize interface is simple and clearly structured.

But if you have reached a point where it feels too narrow and you are
sure you want to spend the necessary time to learn, there is no reason
not to use an Elisp init file.

Just be aware that conflicting settings can lead to surprises.  You
should definitely have a look at both sources regularly.  It might not
always be obvious when and what Emacs saves to your custom file.
