Have a kind of toy-project, called operator-mode, where some small fixes 
seem recommended. You could compile it and contribute into a real 
environment though. It is not part of Emacs itself, so nothing serious 
should happen:

Might also be an occasion to send bug-reports (and exercise the most 
useful way doing it).
