Emacs on Android by Gary
Thanks everyone for listening to my (very!) improvised short talk about
Emacs and org-mode on Android.
Thanks to my hosts for suggesting the talk, asking very intelligent
questions and figuring out the camera work!
Here is some more information. Please, please, please write to me “
android-emacs at rolmo.com” when the instructions are not clear. Eventually
I’ll put it on github or something.
1. Install Termux from the Android Play Store
Termux - ‘emulates’ basic Linux APIs on Android - https://termux.com/
For those who care, yes I know Termux is not _actually_ based on emulating
the Linux kernel in user-space.
When you run termux, you get a shell
Try this :-
$ uname -a
Linux…armv71…
2. In the Termux shell, install Emacs 25.3
$ packages install emacs
3. Install the Android Hacker Keyboard from Android Play Store
You need this for all the meta/ctrl/super/hyper stuff.
4. In your Termux shell
$ emacs
5. OMG Emacs is running on my smartphone!
6. Quit Emacs as normal
Choose Hacker keyboard by swiplng down and choosing the Hacker Keyboard
If something goes wrong you can just kill the Termux app or switch to
another Android App.
6. Personally, I use spacemacs https://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs
The
7. Orgzly - IMHO the best org-mode client for Android
Find it in Android Play.
