hey,

there are two different ways of using the map and calendar:
either using "places" and "events" annotation layers, or
detecting place and event names in all annotation layers
(keywords, notes, subtitles, etc).

the latter may be more straightforward. all you have to do
is select "Manage Places..." / "Manage Events..." in the
"Data" menu, and add places and events. on the map, for
example, you can simply search for a location, and then add
it to the known places (you can still adjust the bounding
box manually, or edit the name, geoname, etc). any clip that
references the place name (or any of its alternative names)
will then automatically appear on the map.
